Certainly, one of the reasons people choose to learn to speed read is that it has the capacity to increase their ability to consume more literature and information. But is that the goal here? When we emphasize speed over comprehension and learning quality, we minimize the effort we are making to increase our wisdom and education. As B.B. King said, “the beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you”. Our education is in our hands. We can choose how and what we learn. As this WIRED article suggests, it is not how fast we can read, but rather what we know that enhances our abilities to read. Perhaps a shift away from fast-paced consumption, towards true engagement with material is the way we should be approaching education. Read Often and Challenge Yourself If you read our first post about the science of speed reading, “Speed Reading: Does it Actually Work?”, you will have noted that the average reader can process between 200-400 words per minute. Faster readers, or those who are on the higher end of the wpm spectrum, tend to have a higher vocabulary and familiarity with language. In other words, these people have experience with reading. One of the best ways to increase your reading experience is to read often and challenge yourself. Read diverse material and expose yourself to as many different topics as possible. Reading speed increases with an increase in knowledge. Essentially the more information you are familiar with, the faster you will read. As well, when you read articles, books, or literature that is challenging, you will learn more complicated words. Avoid Boredom Let’s be honest, academic literature is not always the most thrilled content to consume. This can lead to boredom, exploring social media, or falling asleep at a time when you’re supposed to be studying. There are some ways to mitigate boredom and keep you on track when you’re trying to focus on schoolwork. First, if you tend to read in bed or in a big comfy chair, switch to a less comfortable location. Go to a café, outside, or a desk. This will prevent you from drifting off. As well, if you’re reading a particularly dry document, attempt to link some of the material to something you’re already interested in. For example, if you’re reading about botany, think about how you might apply some of the principles to your daily life. Does what you’re reading apply to the care of plants you have in your apartment? Or are you interested in taking up gardening? By linking the dry content to something in your life, you are more likely to retain and engage with the material. Prepare to Read When you’re reading with the intent to study, it can help to prepare your brain for an intake of information (Rayner, Schotter, Masson, Potter Treiman, 2016). Go through your textbook or the introductory section of a chapter and review all the headings. You may even want to write these down. Read the comments or tips in the sidebars of your textbook. If you’re working with an article, read the abstract, the introduction, and the conclusion. By preparing your brain you are priming yourself to engage with the material and you will increase the speed with which you are able to read the document. Your Reading Speed is a Helpful Tool Speed reading can be a helpful tool for students in combination with some of the other techniques mentioned here. Skimming documents and textbooks is completely acceptable. In fact, some may even suffer discrimination when student leaders carry out nepotism in various forms like wanting to take up all hostel space to accommodate their supporters, and insist on out-of-turn admissions or forcefully make the students swear allegiance to their party in exchange of such favours or resort to violence yet again. Student politics has become as bankrupt of issues as national politics. What matters now are affiliations, caste, history, religion, and of course money. It was never imagined that student politics would breed terrorism, extortion, vandalism and even murder. Students have been used as tools taking them away from pursuing their academic goals. These days student politics is not concerned about the academic problems, such as computer facilities, photocopies at nominal charge, but only about violence, and cadre politics of flexing muscles in the academic areas. And the main casualty of all this violence is Education. The campuses these days have turned out to be arsenals of sophisticated weapons. But this was never the objective that drove the parents to send their wards to join colleges and universities or pursue higher studies. What could be more shocking for the parents than their wards coming back home in a coffin as a sequel to campus violence? It is high time that everyone realises the incalculable harm that â€Å"politics in its ugliest form† has done to the student community. It is evident from the growing incidents of campus violence that Hooliganism is gaining ground than idealism among student leaders. The student unions have become more inclined towards their political identity rather than protesting against ceratin causes for the welfare of the students. Only recently, a second-year BCom student of Prabhu Jagabandhu College in Andul, Howrah, died after he was thrown into a canal by members of a rival students’ union. Two days after this incident, a student Of Ashutosh College lost vision in his left eye after being an innocent victim of campus violence once again. Such incidents are not only limited to India,only last year, in the north-eastern region of Nigeria,26 students were killed,in the aftermath of students union elections, at the college hostels, wherein the the newly elected leader of the student union alongwith his supporters other went from door-to-door, shooting or stabbing their victims. Student Politics has increasingly led to the loss of innumerable young and promising talents of the country. Last but not the least, in spite of the strong presence of students taking part in politics, an inhuman dearth of noble natures in Politics at the national level is being witnessed. 7 Types of Female Characters in Shakespeare's Plays Certain types of female characters often resurface in Shakespeare’s plays, telling us a great deal about his view of women and their status in Shakespeares time. The Bawdy Woman These characters are sexualized, cheeky and flirtatious. They are often working-class characters such as the Nurse in Romeo and Juliet, Margaret in Much Ado about Nothing or Audrey in As You Like It. Mainly speaking in prose, as befitting their low social status, these characters often use sexual innuendo when conversing. Low-class characters like these can get away with more risquà © behavior- perhaps because they have no fear of losing social status. The Tragic Innocent Woman These women are often pure and chaste at the beginning of the play, and tragically die once their innocence is lost. In stark contrast to his presentation of bawdy women, Shakespeare’s treatment of young innocent women is fairly brutal. Once their innocence or chastity is taken away, they are literally killed to signify this loss. These characters are generally courtly, high-born characters such as Juliet from Romeo and Juliet, Lavinia from Titus Andronicus or Ophelia from Hamlet. Their high social standing makes their demise seem all the more tragic. The Scheming Femme Fatal Lady Macbeth is the archetypal femme fatal. Her manipulation of Macbeth inevitably leads them to their deaths: she commits suicide and he is slain. In her ambition to become Queen, she encourages her husband to murder. King Lear’s daughters, Goneril and Regan, plot to inherit their father’s fortune. Once again, their ambition leads them to their deaths: Goneril stabs herself after poisoning Regan. Although Shakespeare seems to appreciate the intelligence at work in his femme fatal characters, allowing them to manipulate the men around them, his retribution is brutal and unforgiving. The Witty, but Unmarriable Woman Katherine from The Taming of The Shrew is a prime example of the witty but unmarriable woman. Feminists have commented that their enjoyment of this play is marred by the fact that a man literally â€Å"breaks† Katherine’s spirit when Petruchio says â€Å"Come on  and kiss me, Kate.† Should we really celebrate this as a happy ending? Similarly, in the plot to Much Ado About Nothing, Benedick ultimately conquers the feisty Beatrice by saying, â€Å"Peace, I will stop your mouth.† These women are presented as clever, bold and independent but are put in their place by the end of the play. The Married Off Woman Many of Shakespeare’s comedies end with an eligible woman being married off – and therefore being made safe. These women are often very young and passed from their father’s care to their new husband’s. More often than not, these are high-born characters such as Miranda in The Tempest who is married to Ferdinand, Helena and Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hero in Much Ado About Nothing. Women Who Dress as Men Rosalind in As You Like it and Viola in Twelfth Night both dress as men. Consequently, they are able to play a more active role in the play’s narrative. The thematic importance of ambition is revealed throughout MacBeth in a manner that is not always instantly visually evident to a conscientious reader. Although it is responsible for MacBeth’s rise to power, his â€Å"vaulting ambition† is also to blame for MacBeth’s tragic downfall. MacBeth would not have been able to achieve his power as King of Scotland, or have been able to carry out his evil deeds, if it was not for his ambition. In these instances, ambition helped MacBeth achieve his goals to a certain subdued degree. Consequently, however, MacBeth's ambition has another face and is what leads him to his disastrous fall from grace. Had he not been fixated with becoming King and remaining powerful, he would not have continued to kill innocent people in order to keep his position. In due course, MacBeth’s removal from power is attributable to these killings, along with his over bearing attitude. MacBeth, at the beginning of the play, seems to be an exceptionally noble person. He is characterized as being vastly loyal and honorable. He courageously and victoriously fights a battle for his country and this establishes a strong sense of his loyalty. MacBeth is later appointed Thane of Cawdor, which, once more, proves that he is honorable in the eyes of royalty. However, the instant the witches spark ambition in him, using their prophecies, he is no longer trustworthy because his mind fills with evil and deceit. Even before he reaches his home, thoughts of murder creep into his head and he is overcome with the desire to be powerful. In the following quotation, MacBeth admits, metaphorically, that it is only his ambition that prompts him. â€Å"I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself and falls on the other† (I, 7, 25 ff). At this point in the play, Macbeth's unruly ambition begins to become apparent. A seed of evil has bloomed into a flower of defiance and MacBeth has reached a point of no return. MacBeth becomes bloodthirsty and power stricken, forcing him further and further into a web of ambition from which he is unable to detach.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  MacBeth's ambition is the fuel that ignites his fire to become fierce and eventually gather the nerve to kill Duncan.
